For most people who drink, alcohol is a pleasant accompaniment to social activities. Moderate alcohol use-up to two drinks per day for men and one drink per day for women and older people-is not harmful for most adults. (A standard drink is one 12-ounce bottle or can of either beer or wine cooler, one 5-ounce glass of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits.) Nonetheless, a large number of people get into serious trouble because of their drinking.
National surveys show that about 6 out of every 10 women of child-bearing age (i.e., aged 18�'44 years) use alcohol, and slightly less than one-third of women who drink alcohol in this age group binge drink.
Alcohol also is linked to cancers of head and neck (the risk is especially high in smokers who also drink heavily).
One quarter of all emergency room admissions, one-third of all suicides, and more than half of all homicides and incidents of domestic violence are alcohol related.
