- Youth who drink alcohol are more likely to experience unwanted, unplanned, and unprotected sexual activity and physical and sexual assault.
- A recent government study shows that alcohol abuse kills as many people in the United States every year as smoking and high blood pressure.
- Excessive alcohol use increases an individual�''s chances of engaging in risky sexual activity including unprotected sex, sex with multiple partners, or sex with a partner at risk for sexually transmitted diseases.
- Six in 10 U.S. adults were current drinkers in 1999-2001 and about 1 in 4 were lifetime abstainers. Nearly one-third of adults were classified as light drinkers (3 or fewer drinks per week). Nearly 5 percent of adults were classified as heavier drinkers (7 or more drinks per week for women; 14 or more for men). About 20 percent of adults had 5 or more drinks per day at least once in the past year.
